Bonus Episode: Christina Xing
This is one of those bonus episodes that’s a perfect example of how nuanced we are as human beings. Christina Xing is an Asian-American director who’s honestly one of the funniest, most thoughtful, and incredibly talented individuals I’ve ever met. She’s been making a fierce name for herself by directing a constant stream of amazing music videos. What makes Christina’s work stand out is how she’s capable of straddling the line between surrealism and presenting moments that hit close to home on a deeply personal level.
The way I came across her work through her short film, This Old Dog, which showcases a young boy trying to have an interaction with his estranged father. The impetus for this film came about from Christina’s own real-life experiences, which is just one of the many areas we explore in this episode. We also talk in-depth about our eerily similar childhoods, along with the stories behind some of her works, including PS5 by Salem, Life of the Party by Sofia Mills, and Write A List of Things To Look Forward To by Courtney Barnett.
Be sure to check out Christina’s website, where you can learn more about her and also see more examples of her work. Also, why not give her a follow on Instagram?
