Liann Kaye

It can’t be overstated that filmmaking is a fascinating profession. A multi-faceted job that requires an individual to tackle tasks that’d seem insurmountable to most of us. But a great director always finds a way, which has exactly been the case with the supremely talented Liann Kaye, a Chinese-American director whose work ethic is inspirational. Liann’s eclectic career is one to be admired, from comedy sketches and short films, to being the director of video for the Global Citizens Festivals (which has seen her work with the likes of Beyonce, Jay Z, Coldplay and Metallic). She’s also directed a slew of astonishing music videos, primarily with her sister Charlene Kaye (who was a guest back in season 1).

Liann’s work always has a level of humanity that feels nearly tangible. This is best conveyed within her award-winning short, The Blessing, a near autobiographical take of when Liann’s fiancé wanted to propose and had to gain the approval of her traditionally-minded immigrant mother. On today’s episode, I chat with Liann about crafting The Blessing, how she’s learned to express herself through directing and why diversity is more than just a buzzword.

Check out Liann’s work on her website and also be sure to follow her on Twitter and Instagram for updates on her upcoming projects!
