Bonus Episode: Catherine Marks
RIP to Arnold “Arno” Charles Ernest Hintjens (May 21, 1949 – April 23, 2022), a Belgian music hero and a previous collaborator of Catherine’s.
It’s kind of wild to think about, but in some ways, this episode has been years in the making. Catherine Marks is a music producer, mixer, and engineer from Australia (now based in London) and it’s insane how many mutual friends we share. From Grammy award-winning Boygenius (featuring Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus), The Big Moon to Alex Lahey and to acts I deeply admire such as Foals, The Killers, Wolf Alice, and Manchester Orchestra; they’ve all worked closely with Catherine to build their music. And it goes even beyond that, where so many artists will work with Catherine and feel as though their whole approach, outlook, and passion towards music becomes fuller through the process.
Yes, this comes from the fact that she’s extremely skilled in a technical basis, but it’s also due to the fact that Catherine is a people person, which comes across in spades on today’s bonus episode. Together, we chat about her experiences of working with some of the artists mentioned above, along with how she got into the music world, and why it’s important to try to “think like an artist.”
After you hear today’s episode, remember to follow Catherine Marks on Instagram and Twitter.
