Samm Henshaw

Editing this episode was a wild experience for me. The way this series works is that the talks are recorded usually months in advance and come out much later. Yet, when I heard the words I shared with today’s guest, it was almost like our past selves were extending a helping hand to our present selves. Samm Henshaw is an unbelievably talented singer and producer from London that’s unabashedly elevating R&B to new heights.

But the most striking thing about Samm’s music is how there is this throwback vibe from his love of soul and gospel, yet it never feels out of place in our modern age. His debut album Untidy Soul, presents Samm as a clear student of music, with a warmth that’ll undoubtedly catch you off-guard. Lyrically, the album sees Samm embracing the fact that we’re all a little fucked up inside and that there’s a beauty in trying to have a better day than the last. On today’s episode, we chat about the importance of those life lessons and how they can inform the work that goes into our art.

You can catch Samm Henshaw live during his upcoming US tour that will be kicking off on June 3rd at the Cafe Du Nord in San Francisco. I’ll definitely be at the June 13th show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, be sure to visit Samm’s website here for more tour dates.

Also, after you hear the episode, be sure to check out Samm Henshaw’s track Take Time (featuring Tobe Nwigwe) on the official New Exchange Playlist. Also, follow Samm Henshaw on Spotify, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
