Passport Season: Germany
It’s quite a fascinating thing, how in a few short decades Germany has transformed into an epicenter of the arts. Whether it’s painting, sculpturing, writing, and music; artists all over the world know that Germany is a place where your creativity can flourish. That reputation has led to Germany becoming an inflection point in Europe for immigrants who seek culture, people from various countries who want to be around artists who’re being supported by both a government and a populace that respects the arts. My favourite thing that I learned while crafting this episode, is that to Germans: the only rule of creativity is for artists to challenge themselves and the audience.
Joining me for this episode are Wallis Bird (a supremely talented singer-songwriter from Ireland who’s based in Berlin), my friends Milky Chance (a rock/reggae/folk outfit from Kassel), and Meagre Martin (an indie-rock trio of Americans who are also based in Berlin). RIP to Kieran (aka Profound Beats). The track you're hearing in the intro is his tune Twilight in Taipei.
A reminder, next week will see the release of the companion broadcast to this episode. That companion piece will feature a stellar collection of German music that I can’t wait for you to hear and remember; you’ll only be able to hear that episode over on Spotify.
Episode Timestamps:
Wallis Bird Chat (3:45), Milky Chance Chat (45:40), and Meagre Martin Chat (1:23:12).
